The California Privet is a medium sized shrub native to Japan. It grows well throughout the US and has been a fixture in American landscaping projects since its introduction in the 1940s. It makes a perfect hedge plant as it grows quickly and matures with a wall of tightly compacted leaves.
The aptly named California Privet is abundant throughout dry states, such as California and Texas. In cooler climates, this shrub requires minimal pruning. Once established, it remains hardy and bears berries which are poisonous to humans but attractive and nutritious for birds and small animals.
