The Black Elder is a popular shrub used in many gardens to provide ground cover across a large region of a garden for use a hedge or part of a garden where wet conditions are common. Providing interest across a large area of a garden the Black Elder is popular because of the large amount of white, showy flowers that bloom around mid Summer from May to June. When forming a border the Black Elder is a good choice because of the ability of the shrub to populate a large area of the border in a short period of time' the plant spreads through the use of root suckers that must be trimmed consistently or it will take over the area of the garden it is planted in.
