Autumn Blaze Maple - Acer freemanii

The Autumn Blaze maple is a cross between the silver maple and the red maple. Autumn Blaze takes the best of both of these trees and combines them. It has the adaptability and quick growth rate of the silver maple, and the strength and beauty of the red maple. This deciduous tree can grow 3 ft a year until it reaches a mature height of 40-50 ft. The leaves of the Autumn Blaze are a medium to dark green with a silver underside. The stalks of the leaves are often red. In the autumn the leaves turn a bright red-orange color. In the winter when the leaves fall, a red coloring can still be seen in any new growth. The tree grows in a uniform shape. An oval with ascending branches. The tree requires little to no pruning. The Autumn Blaze may not always produce fruit. If it does, it will be in the form of samaras a seed encased in a winged pod. The fruit is often called helicopter seeds because of the way they twirl down from the tree. Birds and squirrels eat the fruit as well as use the Autumn Blaze as a sturdy home. The Autumn Blaze is not picky about where it grows. It can grow in any well-drained soil. The tree can grow in full to partial sun. To get the best color plant in full sun. The trees are drought tolerant. Autumn Blaze is also insect and disease resistant. They make a great focal point in any landscape including rain gardens. They make excellent shade trees. They can also be planted near the street as they are pollution tolerant. The Autumn Blaze has won the Urban Tree of the Year award in 2003 and 2004. This tree grows in hardiness zone 3 to 8.
