Button Bush - Cephalanthus Occidentalis

Button Bush Plants - Cephalanthus occidentalis

Button Bush plants proliferate and reach six to twelve feet in height. Their width is approximately four to seven feet. The Button Bush thrives in Hardiness Planting Zones of 5 to 10 and will adapt to any soil provided it is wet or damp. This is the perfect addition to any rain garden and is gorgeous when planted at the edge of a pond. Water up to three feet deep is easily tolerated. The plant can even tolerate a dry area provided it is kept well-watered for the first couple seasons. The Button Bush flourishes in light shade to full sunlight, is a charming addition to any home, and will even grow on a hillside. The maintenance requirements are meager, and it is a beautiful honey plant.

The Button Bush attracts butterflies and hummingbirds because it provides them with a source of nectar. Shorebirds and water birds will come for the seeds and are a delight to watch. Songbirds will often make their nests in the foliage and provide sweet music to float through the air.

Age will usually twist the trunks, and they achieve a unique and exciting shape. The flowers bloom during the spring, have a sensational fragrance and are perfectly round. They are the palest of pink or the purest of white and studded with pistils with little round heads. This gives them the appearance of small pincushions. The flowers are approximately one inch each, with a beautiful and unusual appearance. After the flowers have bloomed, a brownish-red fruit appears and remains throughout the winter. The leaves first look in the early spring and are a deep green with an oval shape. In the fall they turn a magnificent red and attract certain types of butterflies. The Button Bush is beautiful any time of the year because of the lovely flowers in the spring and summer, the fruit in the fall, and the glimmer and shines in the winter.
