Chain Fern - Appearance and Ease of Care
The Giant Chain Fern (Woodwardia fimbriata) is native to west coast forest in North America. It is the largest of the species on the continent.

The plant reaches up to 8 feet high and has very long fronds while the sori are short, broad, and neatly arranged in lines, which has also inspired the name of the Chain Fern. The surface and texture of the sori are visible both n the upper and underside of the leaflets. There are two kinds of Giant Cain Fern- evergreen or summer fern, depending on the growing conditions.

The maximum height of this plant is 1.8 meters. Each mature plant reaches at least 1.2 meters in height. The width is the same so ideally the grown fern is shaped like a sphere, also known as fountain shape. There is a slight musky fragrance, and it is bright green.

The Giant Chain Fern prefers growing in humid conditions, in the shade or the partial shade. It can be found in the wild near springs and forests. The plant flourishes in most fertile soil that drains well. Do not overwater the fern or pack it down too tightly or the roots can catch rot. As a whole, the Giant Chain Ferm is a rather straightforward plant to take care of. It is suitable for beginners.

To improve the appearance of the plant remove the dry fronds to maintain its vibrant color. That will encourage new growth and allow the plant to focus on looking good and being healthy.

The Ginat Chain Ferm is used commonly in landscaping. It is deer resistant and thick. The vibrant appearance and its resistance combined with its ease of care make it excellent for hedges. The Giant Chain Fern is available in nurseries along the west coast or for order online.

Chain Ferns are a large fern native to coastal British Columbia and Mexico. They can be the towering giants of the fern world. A woodland evergreen, this plant features traditionally-shaped fronds that are thicker than their normal-sized cousins. The foliage takes on a leathery appearance and fall in a fountain shape. Despite their size, Chain Ferns are not voracious water consumers. An enticing and pre-historic-looking addition to your garden.
