Christmas Fern- Polystichum Acrostichoides

The Christmas fern is a member of the Wood Fern family (Dryopteridaceae). This lovely fern got its name based on its ability to stay lush and green all the way through the holiday season. This hardy perennial has fronds growing in clusters from their rootstock, which is crownless. Their frond sizes range from one to two feet in length. However, some very fertile fronds can be even longer. It usually reaches a mature height of between 1.5 and 2 feet. The Christmas fern can also occasionally reach 3 feet tall. Its stipe ranges from dark brown to black at its base, fading to green toward the tip of the fronds. The lovely and lush green Christmas fern is a native of the eastern part of North America, ranging from growing in Nova Scotia and then west to Minnesota and as far south as Florida and even into east Texas. It is also naturalized in some European countries. This type of hardy fern is exceptionally easy to establish and can be grown easily in proper conditions. They require well-drained soil that is both cool and moist and also need some shade. Christmas ferns make excellent evergreen borders or can also be used as an accent plant. Its native habitats include thickets, stream banks, swamps, and rich, rocky woods. Christmas ferns prefer humus-rich soil that is moist and acid, as well as sandy to medium acid-based loam. Also, they tend to do best in all sandy or even rocky soils but not in clay or standing water. These ferns require good drainage and, like many other types of ferns can be stressed by too much sun. Christmas ferns, with their lush green lance-shaped fronds, are commercially available and make a beautiful addition to any landscape or even as a stunning indoor plant. They're easy to plant and to grow and are very decorative.

As the name suggests, the Christmas Fern is an evergreen variety with fronds that stay green at Christmas. The Christmas Fern is a winter interest plant that is tolerant of wildlife and shallow, rocky soil. It is effective at helping to control erosion but should be monitored for crown spoilage in constant damp or moist conditions. An exceptional plant to add visual contrast to the foundation of your home.
