Fragrant Sumac -  Rhus Aromatica


The fragrant sumac comes from the plant family, sumac. This plant produces a lemon scent when it crumbles up and is sure to give any garden a citrus aroma. The fragrant sumac is shaped into a small shrub, ranging from 3 to 5 feet in height and 5 to 10 feet in width. Although, some bushes are capable of growing 6 to 8 feet in stature. The leaves have a glossy greenish blue color to them and turn to a red, burgundy or purple color during the fall. The low branches in the fragrant sumac contain stems that are woody and extend forming thickets. The leaves themselves are about 1 to 3 inches long. Small, yellow, dense flowers often produce from this plant during their blooming time in March, April, and May. The bony seeds are noticeable in the center pile of the leaves. Best of all, the fragrant sumac produces red, bean-like fruits during June, July, and August. The berries often attract birds, including robins and sparrows. The seeds are typically winter food for small animals and birds. The nectar in the flower of the fragrant sumac is a valuable source for all sorts of butterflies. This plant can grow in the sun or partial shade. The best kind of soil for this plant would be moist, acidic soil or sandy soil. The fragrant sumac is capable of growing in Zone 3, Zone 4, Zone 5, Zone 6 and in Zone 7. The plant can withstand cold climates, as well as hot climates. It is drought-tolerant and fast growing. Many people use this plant as a foundation or a mixed border in their garden or landscape.
