Pee Gee Hydrangea: Hydrangea paniculata

The Pee Gee Hydrangea or Hydrangea paniculata is a plant indigenous of Japan that was introduced further west in 1862. This flowering shrub was desired because of its plethora of flowers. The Pee Gee Hydrangea can grow to a height of ten to twenty feet and spread as wide as ten or twenty feet as well. The hydrangea grows round, and is either left as a shrub or can be pruned into a small flowering tree. To do this the most massive stem of the bush is kept and staked to give the tree more stability. The other stems are pruned back, leaving stems on the upper quarter of the new "trunk." In the spring the lower branches will need to be pruned back again.

Whether as a shrub or tree, the Pee Gee Hydrangea is a fast grower, possibly increasing upwards of two feet every growing season. Pee Gee's prefer full sun and partial shade. This shrub does best with at least four hours of direct sunlight daily. For best success, this shrub can be grown in acidic, sandy, porous, nutrient-rich, clay and any well-drained soil. The popularity of this hydrangea is aided by its ability to grow in a wide array of climates and soils. The pee gee hydrangea can be expected to grow in Hardiness Zones 3–8, which encompasses most of the continental United States.

The Pee Gee Hydrangea is favorite because of its large white flowers that will turn and purple or pink throughout the summer season. The branches, or clusters, of these flowers, are usually six to eight inches long but can grow more than twelve to eighteen inches if the hydrangea is pruned down to between five to ten clusters. The leaves of the Pee Gee are dark green and will be three to six inches long with serrated edges. During the summer the leaves can be somewhat reflective.
