Poly Fern - Setiferum Congestum

The Many Attributes of Poly Ferns
Poly Ferns - Polypodium

The ornamental poly fern is native to America and Africa. It creeps along rock surfaces or tucks in among rotted logs. Because it claims many nutrients from the air and water, it is flexible enough to live and flourish on limbs of oak and cypress trees with Spanish moss as a companion. Moreover, this favored plant thrives in sun, shade, damp or dry.

The narrow, leathery-textured leaflets appear in shades of yellow-green. Cinnamon-colored spore cases dot the undersides of the leaf blades in summer and early autumn. Because of their smaller size, they are attractive as border plants and edgings. In demand as hanging baskets in interior decor, they work as filters to keep the air fresh and healthy.

The unusual rhizome appearance resembles hairy, scaly feet. This added feature gives it an additional name of rock cap fern, which in ancient Greek means "little foot." Instead of growing from a central root clump, the poly fern has a trailing root system that sends up new fronds at intervals. This natural matting habit makes it suitable for slopes or other areas that have erosion problems. Additionally, it's possible to start new plants from rhizome sections.

Poly ferns are hardy and dependable greenery that performs well in zones 6 - 8. It grows up to 12 inches high and wide. Unlike many other ferns, this one withstands drought by curling the fronds. Although the foliage appears brown and dead during a dry period, all it needs to rehydrate is a little water. The restored green returns within a day or more.

The poly fern is a low maintenance plant that substitutes well in place of shrubs that require constant shaping and pruning. Additionally, native plants perform well in organic habitats where they grow into lush vegetation from food provided in the process of decomposing leaf drops. Artificial fertilizers and pesticides aren't necessary. The fern garden is an earth-friendly experience.
