It is an evergreen pine tree, and it's super sturdy and lives for decades. It's one of the favorites for south and eastern united states. Hardy in most zones and proliferates. The ponderosa pine tree is also commonly known as the Pinus ponderosa. This species grows in various habitats in the western United States and Canada. The ponderosa pine tree is known for its pleasant smell resembling vanilla with a hint of butterscotch. The tree has dark gray and black colored bark with deep cracks that often form patterns. The bark on younger trees show a slightly different color and are more flaky in appearance. The green needles are bundled together and are about 5 to 10 inches long. The pine cones are about 3 to 6 inches long. Aged trees grow approximately 150 to 180 feet tall. The trees are about 3 to 4 feet tall in diameter. Native Americans used the tree for food and also for medicinal purposes. The tree can be used to reduce fever, for coughs, for muscular pain, earaches, and for inflamed eyes. If seedlings are planted, they should be planted at the edge of the open country so that they can adapt to its habitat. During hot summer months, they should be shaded. They should also be protected from deer and watered during the summer until roots reach deep moisture for twelve to twenty-four months.
