Otherwise known as Winterberry and Swamp Holly, Possom Haw bushes are a shrub that will bring a variety of wildlife to your yard. Suitable for zones 5-9, this deciduous plant loses its leaves in the fall and grows very slowly, less than a foot per year. At maturity, it will be 10-20 feet tall and equally wide, with a definite round shape. This shrub does best in moist soil that is sandy, loamy, or clay. It requires full sunlight but will do alright with moderate shade. This hardy shrub can tolerate acidic soil, prolonged drought, and even extended flooding conditions.
True to its name, this plant will attract opossums to your yard, as well as raccoons, song birds, and game birds. The toothed leaves are oval and dark green, with a glossy surface. They turn yellow in the fall before dropping off the shrub. The branches are gray and grow horizontally. In the spring, this plant has small, white blooms that turn into dark red berries which remain during the winter months and provide nourishment to many animals. Occasionally the berries will be bright orange instead of deep red. This attractive plant provides dazzling color year round.
This lovely tree would go well in your yard, and its hardy nature makes it a suitable choice as an ornamental or accent tree. Very little pruning is required, and Possom Haw is not overly susceptible to disease or pests. It's important to plant mainly female trees with a male pollinator as only female trees bear fruit in the fall and winter. This tree is suitable for virtually any area provided the soil has some drainage, and there is at least moderate sunlight. Possum Haw is a good choice for a four season plant and attracts many wild animals. This plant is shipped bare root for immediate planting and maximum customer satisfaction.
