Red Oak Trees - Quercus Rubra
The Many Attributes of Red Oak Trees
One of the prettiest trees throughout the growing season is the red oak tree. This tree produces very tiny pink flowers in the spring before putting on bright green leaves during the late spring and summer months. Its real beauty, however, comes in the fall when it produces russet-brown to crimson leaves depending on the amount of sun the leaves have received during the summer. Finally, the tree loses its leaves in late autumn. It is even more attractive as the foliage is over a gray trunk that can have many interesting grooves in it.
The red oak tree can reach heights up to 75 feet, and it is almost as wide as it is tall making it an outstanding shade tree for the yard. It prefers to get over six hours of sunlight daily, but it will tolerate other trees or buildings giving it partial shade. This tree prefers to grow in areas that drain well in acidic soil, but it will tolerate alkaline soils. This species prefers loamy soil, but it is moderately tolerant of sandy soil. It is a magnet for game birds and mammals, and it often serves as a nesting home for many species of migratory birds. The red oak tree usually grows up to two feet each year. It is moderately tolerant of drought conditions once it gets more than three decades old.
This tree produces male and female flowers on the same tree. The male flowers are found in hanging catkins while the female flowers are found in tiny spikes when the tree puts on new leaves. The leaves on this tree have between seven and 11 lobes with a bristle tip. The red oak tree also produces acorns ranging in size from 0.75 inches-to-one-inch long with each one having a thin flat cap.
The Red Oak will make a wonderful addition to your lawn. This tree is a gradually growing tree. It will grow 1 to 2 feet each year. This tree will adapt to various types of soil conditions.
