Shumard Oak – Quercus Shurmardii

The Many Attributes of Shumard Oak Trees
Shumard Oak Tree-Quercus shumardii

Since first being introduced to the market in 1907, the Shumard oak tree has become exceedingly popular with many homeowners for its thick foliage that blocks the sun very efficiently. This tree can grow to heights of more than 60 feet and has an exceedingly round canopy that is usually nearly as wide as the tree is tall. This tree can grow up to 24 inches a year, although a growth rate of fewer than 16 inches is much more common.

This tree loves the sun, and it should be planted where it gets at least six hours of unfiltered sun each day. This tree is an excellent asset to yards of homeowners wanting colorful fall foliage because its leaves turn from green to a brilliant reddish-orange each autumn.

The deciduous leaves on this tree have extremely deep lobes. They range in size from four to eight inches, and some of them end in a bristle tip. The trunks of these trees tend to shoot straight up in the air after coming off deep buttresses near ground level. They are often preferred as climbing trees if their lower limbs are not pruned high off the ground. These trees can live to be up to 200 years old.

The beautiful Shumard oak tree prefers well-drained soils. It grows equally well in soils that are alkaline or acidic making it an extremely flexible tree. It also transplants very well if the homeowner does not like where they first decide to put the tree. While it needs some water, it will tolerate dry conditions. This tree handles compact dirt, air pollution and other hazards of the city extremely well.

Every two to four years this tree produces one-inch in diameter acorns that are a favorite treat of many types of animals. Deer and squirrels are primarily drawn to these egg-shaped acorns that have a flat saucer-like cap
