Silver Maple - Acer Saccharinium

Silver Maple, Acer saccharinum goes by many names including soft maple, water maple, and white maple. However, its most common name, the silver maple, is derived from the soft silver underside of its leaves and younger trees' silver-gray bark. This beautiful tree is an ideal addition to any garden. Often used as an ornamental tree, Silver Maples grow well in urban and rural environments. They need little maintenance and are commonly used along streets and boulevards. Their natural range is as far north as Norway and as far south as Florida meaning they can grow in just about any climate.

The Silver Maple is a fast-growing tree that reaches an average height of 66ft although they have been recorded reaching heights of 115 ft. This fast growth, however, makes it susceptible to being damaged in storms. Despite this, they resilient and on average live between 80 and 120 years. Its average width is between 39 - 49 ft. The Silver Maple flowers in the spring, a unique characteristic among maple trees that it shares with only the Red Maple. This tree is highly adaptable but needs lots of sunlight to grow. They are often found in wet environments such as along river banks or wetlands, which has earned it the nickname Water Maple.

Gentle breezes will produce a lovely accent color for any garden as its silver undersides are exposed. In autumn, you can expect this tree to produce pale yellow leaves, although it has been known to produce bright yellow, orange and red leaves that generally characterized maple trees. These trees welcome a variety of wildlife, bringing squirrels, many species of birds including owls, and woodpeckers into your garden. Their leaves are food sources for the beautiful Rosy Maple Moth. With these gorgeous trees, your garden will be full of life and color year round.
