Spiraea x vanhouttei Shrub

The Spiraea x vanhouttei Shrub is a medium hybrid shrub which was developed sometime before 1866. The Vanhoutte spirea resulted from a cross between S. cantoniensis (Reeves spirea) and S. trilobata (three-lobed spirea). It’s a commonly planted shrub because it’s so pretty and easy to grow, although one of its parents - S. trilobata - is denser and more compact. Still, the Vanhoutte spirea is commonly planted as an ornamental shrub in much of North America and is sometimes called as bridal wreath spirea as well. Vanhoutte spirea is a deciduous shrub with branches that arch gracefully towards the ground and generally grows to be between 5 and 8 feet tall. Plants of 10 feet or more are not unknown either. During April-May, this shrub’s branches are notably covered in tiny white flowers which appear in umbellate clusters. This is a lovely effect which will animate your yard in springtime. This is a favorite plant with wildlife as it has small brown fruits which are often eaten by songbirds, and deer love consuming its branches and leaves. In the fall, the leaves may take on a purplish or reddish hue before falling off. Indeed, this is a beautiful plant to behold at pretty much any time of the year. Vanhoutte spirea is generally hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 8, although it requires acidic soil to thrive. This means that while cold weather won’t be an issue, the alkaline soil will adversely affect the plant’s health. While not a desert plant, Vanhoutte spirea is pretty tolerant to drought and doesn’t seem very susceptible to any severe insect problems. As long as it’s planted correctly, Vanhoutte spirea requires little maintenance and is incredibly easy to grow while still looking elegant.
