Wake Robin Trillium

Wake Robin trillium, part of the Lily family, is also known by the names Red Trillium, Beth Root, Purple Trillium, and Stinking Benjamin. It is a three-leaved ornamental plant that grows a deep red flower. Blooming from April-June, some can bloom with white or brown flowers, however, most commonly will bloom deep red bordering or purple. These blooms are comprised of three, diamond-shaped petals at the top of a woody stem, which will have three leaves, keeping with the Trillium family. Native to the Eastern United States and Eastern Canada, this plant grows in zones 4 through 8, being able to tolerate frigid winter temperatures as low as negative 31 degrees Fahrenheit. Reaching an average height of 16 inches with a spread of 12 inches, this plant is found wild in wooded areas with moist and fertile soil. Planting in such an area with plenty of shade will ensure optimal growth. However, this species is known to be one of the more tolerant of The Trillium species and will tolerate acidic or alkaline soils. This plant is also deer resistant and excellent for smaller spaces in a shade garden. In time, this plant will multiply and fill space well with beautiful three-petaled flowers. The aroma of this flower is considered to be fetid, which is to attract pollinators such as flys.
These plants were famous among the Native Americans, and once America was colonized, they were popularly used in herbal medicine.Today they are used merely as ornamental plants. As the forests were cleared for farming, these flowers were quickly pulled, and their numbers promptly lessoned. While these plants are not considered endangered in most areas, it is still quite common in some places; it is even regarded as unique and a pleasure to grow. Making an excellent addition to any garden is sure.
