Zebra Grass – Miscanthus Sinensis
Zebra Grass- Miscanthus sinensis
The long arching leaves of the zebra grass love to put on a show regardless of the season. This sun-loving perennial starts the year as an architecturally stunning blade of grass. Then, in the spring it puts on its striped variegated foliage as creamy yellow stripes cut across the light green stem. When temperatures begin to drop in the autumn, it first puts on tiny white flowers before the stem becomes a beautiful copper gold and the flowers turn to seed. After the seeds have dispersed, it loses its summer and fall foliage, once again becoming a tall skeleton blade of grass that is tan in color. Therefore, many homeowners choose to include a clump on it as a showpiece in their yards.
This grass often grows to seven feet tall. Once established, it can experience short periods of drought, but it likes a moist environment. Stalks need to be cut back in the early spring just before emerging again. This plant looks great in a variety of settings helping to create a vertical connection between shorter plants and trees. It can spread up to five feet making it a good choice for hedges and privacy fences. This plant also does well in containers. This plant loves organic soil. It should be planted where the soil drains well, especially in the winter. Zebra grass grows equally well in clay or loamy soil. This ornamental perennial grows from an underground rhizome.
The copper-colored flower spikelets on this ornamental grass appear in late summer just as many garden flowers are starting to fade make this plant a particularly beautiful addition to many different types of gardens. The flower spikelets appear to be covered in a hair-like substance that wave in the autumn breeze. This lovely plant requires little care after it is established except for its yearly pruning.
Zebra grass will remind you of an exotic plant. This grass is great to use in landscaping projects. It will do well in a variety of soil conditions. This is a very strong plant, and it does tolerate drought conditions.
